about

Guilt formed in the autumn of 1992 when duncan Barlow and Kyle Noltemeyer began writing songs they hoped would create sonic possibilities that existed between genres. Eventually they rounded out the group with Jon Smith and Ashli State, who made significant contributions to the direction of the band.

What they developed were songs that were angular, rhythmic, and heavy and which walked the between harmony and disharmony, melody and noise. Lyrically, Barlow found inspiration from the stories of his friends’ lives; lyrical montages with loose narratives dealing with violence against women and children, abusive working situations, exploitation of women in the music industry, and struggles with mental illnesses. In an interview Barlow said, “I’m deeply inspired by my community. So often friends suffer unimaginable abuses. I guess it’s my way of honoring them.”

With each release, Guilt’s sound evolved. Bardstown Ugly Box, Guilt’s only full-length record, marked a drastic departure from the simplicity of their first release. Recorded by Bob Weston in Steve Albini’s home studio that would later become Electrical Audio, Bardstown Ugly Box offers a much more complex arrangement of songs. With a label behind them and a US tour only weeks away, the band was eager to record. However, before they would leave for Chicago, Barlow mother would be hospitalized and her condition would grow worse; the band left the studio without finishing the record, and Barlow would return to his mother’s side for her final moments. In the end, Guilt found themselves unsatisfied with how Bardstown Ugly Box turned out.

In 2019, Barlow & Guilt reclaimed the rights to their music and worked with producer Steve Evetts (Dillinger Escape Plan, Snapcase, Earth Crisis, Every Time I Die) to remix the record. Evetts worked to preserve the initial artistic direction of the recording, but was able to go make the record sound a little closer to the band’s signature heaviness contained in the band’s live sound. Bardstown Ugly Box is a singular record, and though it all but disappeared upon release, musicians and critics would cite it as an influential record.
